In 1965, by order of Congress, the US Mint removed all silver from dimes and quarters. Silver content for half-dollars was reduced to 40% up until 1972, when all silver was removed from the half-dollar as well.
The Walking Liberty Half Dollar, designed by Adolph A. Weinman, is considered one of the best designed US silver coins. The obverse depicts a walking Lady Liberty holding an olive branch above a rising sun with “LIBERTY” in an arc at the top of the coin, and also shows the mint date.
The reverse shows a perched bald eagle, our national symbol.
