South African Gold Krugerrand

 was the first gold coin in the world minted for investment purposes and is believed to be the most widely owned gold coin in the world.

The Krugerrand’s obverse features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the first president of the South African Republic. “Kruger” is surrounded by the name of his nation in both English and Afrikaans, two of South Africa’s eleven official languages.

The reverse side of the coin features a springbok which is a South African antelope. This side also depicts the date of issue and amount and purity of gold.

The Krugerrand does not carry a face value. Each Krugerrand minted by the South African Mint contains one ounce of gold with a coin composition of 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper. The relatively large amount of copper incorporated to strengthen the coin gives it a more copper like color than most other gold coins.
