US Liberty Head $20 Gold Double Eagle

Minted from 1850 to 1907, the

US Liberty Head $20 Gold Double Eagle

 was authorized by the US Congress because of the California gold rush. Of all the gold coins minted before 1907, the $20 Double Eagle had the highest gold content.

There were three versions of the $20 Liberty Head minted:
Type I was called the “No Motto;”
Type II had “Twenty D” on the reverse;
Type III had the words “Twenty Dollars” spelled out.

The world–famous portrait of Miss Liberty on the obverse and the American Eagle on the reverse assure that these are heirloom–quality works of art. The design for the $5, $10, and $20 Liberty Head gold coins was created by Christian Gobrecht whose design was inspired by a portrait of Venus.

The $20 gold Eagles are .9675 troy ounces of gold and are 90% pure gold with 10% copper.
